Robinson Hall Dormitory
Irwin & Leighton was proud to be selected as the Design Builder for Penn State’s new North Halls Dormitory. Together with /EYP Architects the team designed the new dormitory to Penn State’s standards and budget. The team broke ground on March 7, 2016 with the demolition of a large surface parking area that sits between Stuckeman, Holmes and Runkle Halls. This new five-story, +/-90,000 square feet, 300-bed residence hall is now home to first year students at Penn State’s Main campus. Common spaces include floor lounges and study nooks, laundry rooms, a communal kitchen, community and study rooms and a Resident Life Staff apartment on the ground floor. This project took into special consideration its environmental footprint and seeks to achieve a minimum of a LEED Silver Certification. The building was constructed in an “L” shape allowing for extra space outside for students to enjoy.
Key Highlights:
Utilized Design-Assist for the structural and mechanical, electrical and plumbing trades
Complete 4D BIM model including cost estimating
Subsurface conditions required the use of deep foundations/piles
Utilizing an infinity slab and structural system which has helped to reduce costs and expedite the overall project schedule
Required very early and detailed M.E.P. coordination with the metal stud wall panels to confirm structural integrity of the wall panels are maintained
Constructed on a constrained site flanked by four (4) adjacent occupied dormitories, a common building and two (2) academic buildings
Safety and security of students and faculty and visitors is a priority
M.E.P. services fed from adjacent common building which also feeds adjacent dormitories. Key coordination with Penn State required shut-downs and tie-ins to existing systems
Project Duration: 18 Months
