Holder, Hamilton and Madison Halls Renovation and Holder Tower Restoration

Located in the northwest corner of Princeton's campus, The Holder-Hamilton-Madison Halls complex was built between 1909 and 1917 and included two residence halls and dining facilities. Irwin & Leighton renovated all three buildings in overlapping phases over three years.

Holder Hall Renovation and Memorial Tower Restoration

Renovation of this historic residence hall involved ± 97,200 SF of interior renovations and included lowering the basement elevation to accommodate new common spaces and offices, all new windows and new mechanical, electrical and fire protection services as well as selective reroofing and exterior restoration.

The restoration of Holder Memorial Tower, performed to exacting historical standards, included cleaning, repointing, matching, and refurbishment of the 10-story masonry structure. Extensive logistical planning was required to develop an effective and safe scaffolding scheme as the tower reaches ± 200 feet above busy Nassau Street in downtown Princeton.

The project included the Mathey Library, a theater, classroom, and computer laboratory as well as the creation of administrative and housing spaces. Irwin & Leighton’s work included complete interior demolition, structural work, replacement of leaded glass windows, an extensive amount of millwork, and new systems and finishes throughout.

Jadwin Hall Renovation

Irwin & Leighton recently completed the final phase of a six-phased, multi-year renovation of Princeton University’s Physics building – Jadwin Hall. Irwin & Leighton was the original builder of Jadwin Hall in the early 1970s along with its neighbor building for Mathematics study – Fine Hall.

Begun in September 2009 and substantially completed in June 2013, the ± 240,000 SF renovation of the building (that remained occupied and operational throughout construction) encompassed office, classroom, laboratory, and mechanical spaces. The scope involved new interior finishes; an upgraded telecommunications infrastructure; a new fire protection system; replacement of the HVAC systems; installation of new energy efficient lighting; replacement of all perimeter windows; replacement of the existing electrical substation; and construction of a ± 8,000 SF penthouse to house the new mechanical equipment.
